The U.S. Embassy and consulates in Mexico issued a security alert for U.S. citizens in several cities across the country, including tourist destinations such as Puerto Vallarta, Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, and Mazatlán.
The measure comes after the death of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as “El Mencho,” leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, who was killed by Mexican security forces in a recent operation.
The drug lord’s death triggered a wave of violence and unrest in various states, including road blockades, vehicle burnings, and clashes, as well as incidents in high-traffic areas such as the Guadalajara airport.
For this reason, U.S. authorities recommended that their citizens remain in their accommodations, limit unnecessary travel, and closely follow the instructions of local authorities.
Although airports remain operational in most cases, some domestic and international flights have experienced delays or cancellations due to the security situation. Tourists in transit should anticipate potential disruptions and stay informed about evolving situations.
The U.S. State Department advises travelers to check official travel advisories before leaving the country, enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program to receive notifications, and maintain constant contact with family or trusted individuals. It is also recommended to avoid areas with a heavy security presence or unusual activity and to follow the instructions of authorities in case of an emergency.
This type of alert can influence travel planning to Mexico, especially during peak tourist season, and affects the perception of safety in popular destinations.
For U.S. tourists and tour operators, the situation underscores the importance of staying informed and considering additional precautions when visiting the country while security stabilizes in the affected regions.
