Chicago.(HINA) Juan Salgado, Chancellor of City Colleges of Chicago, has been elected to serve on the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur’s Board of Directors. He will join the Board in September.
“Juan is an innovative leader with a long commitment to extending economic advancement to communities that are often excluded from opportunity,” said Board Chair Dan Huttenlocher. “He will be an important addition to the Board.”
Salgado has devoted his career to improving education and upward mobility in systemically marginalized communities. As Chancellor of City Colleges–Chicago’s community college system–he has focused on removing barriers to college and better supporting the colleges’ 70,000 students.
“Juan creates paths to economic stability for people regardless of nationality, citizenship, or life circumstances.”
Prior to leading City Colleges, Salgado was CEO of Instituto del Progreso Latino, an organization that helps people obtain sustainable employment and economic stability through education, citizenship, and skill-building programs. Salgado was named a MacArthur Fellow in 2015 for this work, which created a model for workforce development and training with immigrant communities. He also serves on the board of the Obama Foundation.
“I am excited to welcome Juan to the Board,” said MacArthur President John Palfrey. “He has long been a champion of racial and ethnic equity and justice, and educational opportunity in Chicago. Juan creates paths to economic stability for people regardless of nationality, citizenship, or life circumstances. I am eager to see the insights he brings to the Foundation’s work.”
Salgado joins ten other members of the Foundation’s Board of Directors. MacArthur’s Board sets policies and strategy for the Foundation; approves grantmaking areas, initiatives, and grants; and oversees investments and the audit process.
