CHICAGO — Cook County Commissioner George A. Cardenas officially announced his candidacy for Mayor of Chicago, launching a campaign centered on fiscal responsibility, public safety, economic growth, and government accountability.

In a message to supporters, Cardenas said his decision came after months of conversations with residents, business owners, labor leaders, civic organizations, and families throughout Chicago.

“This campaign is built on a simple belief: Chicago can work again,” Cardenas said.

Cardenas brings decades of public and private sector experience to the race. An immigrant, United States Navy veteran, management consultant, former 20-year Chicago alderman, and current Cook County commissioner, he emphasized a record of problem-solving and advocacy for working families.

“Through hard work and opportunity, a better future is possible,” Cardenas said. “Today, too many Chicagoans feel that promise slipping away.”

The mayoral candidate pointed to several challenges facing the city, including affordability concerns, obstacles to business growth, public safety issues, and declining public confidence in government.

At the center of his campaign is a comprehensive review of Chicago’s finances and operations conducted by his team over the past several months. According to Cardenas, the effort examined city budgets, contracts, procurement practices, public safety operations, pension obligations, and economic development programs.

“We’ve studied every aspect of city government not to criticize, but to build a practical roadmap for restoring accountability and results,” he said.

Cardenas said his campaign will focus on restoring fiscal discipline, strengthening public safety, promoting economic opportunity, and making Chicago more affordable and welcoming for residents and businesses.

The official campaign kickoff and fundraising reception is scheduled for July 21 at Fioretta Rooftop in Chicago’s Fulton Market district. During the event, Cardenas plans to present his vision and policy priorities for the city’s future.

Supporters, community leaders, and residents are expected to attend as the campaign begins what Cardenas described as “the next chapter” for Chicago.

“Chicago has overcome great challenges before,” Cardenas said. “We can do it again.”
