CHICAGO — Mayor Brandon Johnson and the Chicago Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection (BACP) announced the celebration of National Small Business Week, which takes place from May 4 to 9, highlighting the key role of small businesses in the local economy.
The event is aligned with the US Small Business Administration (SBA) initiative, which promotes support and recognition for entrepreneurs across the country.
The role of small businesses in the economy
“Small businesses are the heart of Chicago’s communities,” said Mayor Brandon Johnson. “This is a moment to celebrate the entrepreneurs who drive our local economy and strengthen our neighborhoods.”
The mayor also noted that his administration is seeking to simplify municipal processes to facilitate the creation and growth of businesses in the city.
Institutional support for entrepreneurs
BACP Commissioner Ivan Capifali emphasized that the city is working to make the business environment more accessible.
As he explained, the goal is to offer clear tools and simpler processes for both new entrepreneurs and established businesses.

- May 7: Programs and resources for small businesses
- May 8: Financing and Business Creation
The workshops are designed to guide those who want to start or expand a business in Chicago.

Federal and community support
From the US Small Business Administration, Illinois district director Willette LeGrant highlighted that entrepreneurs are driving innovation and job creation across the country.
Community organizations such as Quad Communities Development Corporation also emphasized the importance of supporting businesses from their initial stage to their growth.
National Small Business Week in Chicago is presented as a comprehensive strategy to strengthen the local economic fabric, promoting training, access to resources and consumption within the community.
The city’s approach seeks to ensure that small businesses not only survive, but become a central engine of economic growth in all of Chicago’s neighborhoods.
